A Participatory Approach to Sustainable and Healthy Food Consumption Patterns

Healthy, sustainable and affordable food for all—it’s possible if we work together. To make this a reality, we must rethink our food systems, reducing their environmental impact while ensuring food security for all. The SPOON project is here to drive that change; it will empower individuals and decision-makers to create lasting solutions for a better food future.

What is SPOON?

SPOON is a four-year, EU-funded project that brings together citizens, researchers, industries, civil society organizations, and policymakers to reimagine food production, distribution and consumption. By facilitating partnerships and driving collaboration, we aim to build a more sustainable and inclusive food system.

What we will accomplish together

  • Understanding food systems: Gather local insights to tackle food waste, security and environments for sustainable and healthier consumption.
  • Shaping food behaviours: Apply behavioural science to design practical, sustainable and healthier eating solutions.
  • Driving digital innovation: Leverage data-driven tools to analyse food purchasing and consumption trends.
  • Empowering decision-makers: Equip key actors with data, community input, and foster collaboration to transform food systems.

How we will drive change and make an impact

  • 6 Citizen Science Labs: Community-driven research hubs engaging citizens in food system challenges in Germany, Greece, Italy, Belgium, Spain, and Slovenia.
  • 6 Behaviour Change Interventions: Supporting healthier, more sustainable food choices.
  • SPOON Digital Toolset: Secure data tools for food insights and governance.
  • SPOON Academy of Change: Training professionals to drive food system transformation.
  • Policy Recommendations: Evidence-based guidance for policymakers.
  • Workshops & Events: Connecting stakeholders to scale impact.
