Thessaloniki celebrates community-driven food innovation

World Urban Vineyards Day brought citizens together to explore urban sustainability

On April 26, Thessaloniki joined cities such as Adelaide, London, Cleveland, Catania and Vienna in celebrating World Urban Vineyards Day, an international initiative of the Urban Vineyards Association network highlighting the growing role of productive urban spaces in shaping more sustainable and connected cities.

At the heart of the celebration was Doxa Park, Thessaloniki’s green hub featuring an urban vineyard, orchard and vegetable garden. Here, citizens, local organisations and project partners came together for a public picnic, urban wine tasting, traditional performances and open discussions on food, wellbeing and sustainable urban development.

The urban vineyard, developed by the Municipality of Thessaloniki in collaboration with Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and Ktima Gerovassiliou, reflects the city’s long-term commitment to food-related innovation, supported by local partnerships, European projects and active community engagement.

The event also provided an opportunity to showcase SPOON, opening dialogue around citizen participation, dietary habits and local food systems. Representatives from our partner Incommon and the Municipality engaged directly with attendees, sharing ongoing initiatives and inviting residents to take part in upcoming project activities.
