Thessaloniki’s climate transition starts with food

The city is turning food policy actions into a key driver of its climate neutrality strategy

The Municipality of Thessaloniki is placing food and food policy at the heart of its climate neutrality efforts, moving from planning to implementation through practical, city-led initiatives that actively involve local communities.

This approach was recently highlighted during a study visit by partners from the European project ReGenWesT, which provided a direct insight into Thessaloniki’s work on sustainable food systems and local climate action.

During the visit, participants experienced how food-related practices can support climate objectives through initiatives such as the municipal vineyard and the city’s urban wine. At the core of this work is the SPOON project, through which we translate food policy into action by combining Citizen Science Labs with targeted support for local food actors. By engaging citizens directly in research and data collection, we reinforce the link between food systems, communities and climate action.
